There is a ton of complaints about the refs and also complaints about players constantly whining to the refs on here this year it seems like. I've been out of the game for a few years now, but when I played most refs we had did a bit of jr a, some jr b and mostly sr games. And the linesman were almost always a couple local guys who did almost all the home games for a certain team or area. Each team had a few imports with elite experience but there was also a lot of local players that honestly matched the quality of the officials. That isn't to slight those refs or the players its just how it was.
So now with teams made up of 2/3 to 3/4 elite talent, has there been any increase in the use or availability of 'elite' officials? Are any refs who do whl games coming down to do a sr game? I'm actually asking because I don't know.
Fans should enjoy the high quality of hockey they get to watch, and these 'elites' should also be a bit thankful they can earn some good side money to keep playing the game competitively while the true elites move on to professional ranks. Without the pissing and moaning about officials.

Can’t really fully answer your question, I’ve definitely seen WHL and SJHL refs in senior these last couple of years but I don’t know if it’s more or less then years prior, I have also seen my fair share of refs who have never called a higher level then senior, so it’s tough to say. I came here to comment on the complaining about refs tho. Seems like every series or every close game the losing team is somehow always on the short end of the officiating. Like C’mon guys, every team gets bad calls at some point. I’ve personally been to games where people are complaining on here saying “worse reffing I’ve seen in 20 years” and the officiating was completely fine imo, and I was cheering for the team that apparently got screwed lol. I think players also forget if you **** and complain to refs all game they aren’t going to favour your team lol, that’s a part of the game. Don’t get me wrong I’ve seen bad reffing before, or specific officials holding grudges on teams, but realistically lots of the time players and fans just want something to complain about, it’s always been like this, just more prevalent now that you can complain online.

Referee assigning is done in order. I believe the order is something like this. AHL WHL SJ Jr B Senior AAA AA Etc etc.
Assignors assign a certain area as opposed to certain leagues. Some dub guys will do Senior but not many. Some SJ guys will do senior but again not a large amount. By the time it gets to senior, there is only a pool of so many officials in the areas. Some of those guys like mentioned above, only work senior and lower.
Beating the same old tired story. There are just not many refs. The unfortunate thing is that in turn can mean guys stepping out to officiate a game that maybe aren’t as comfortable in a senior game as others.
Senior hockey is a different animal. There are some refs that do western league or SJ that struggle in a senior game whereas guys that only do senior can sometimes have a better feel for the league.
Much like adjusting to the team you’re playing, sometimes teams may need to adjust how they play on who is officiating that night. Regardless of if you think that is right or not, it’s the truth. Some refs won’t put up with the complaining all game and assess a penalty because of it. Other refs might ignore the noise. Others might give it right back to the player/coach complaining.
Not sure what my point is here but the officiating is inconsistent no matter what level. Some nights are good, others are not. Assignors attempt to put the best available officials on the ice on a night in by night out basis.
