A good game in Moosomin last nite and I predicted a 9-7 score either way. I wasn't that wrong. Carlyle trailed 2-1 after one with both goaltenders Levi Horn and Landon Audette playing well. Cougars outshot the Rangers two to one but Horn made a lot of great saves. The game changed early in the second. After Moosomin scored shorthanded, Jesse Gabrielle replied seconds later and it was 3-2. The game tilted shortly thereafter when Kyle McGonigal received 4 minutes for high-sticking. 2 more shorties and a power play tally and it was 6-2 Rangers midway through. Carlyle fought back with three straight later in the period and then two late ones by Moosomin and it was 8-5 after two. Gabrielle potted his second of the night in the third making the final 8-6 Rangers. Moosomin was easily swept by the Redvers Rockets in last year's final but have added Ryker Cole, Brock Trotter and Jason Elmes among others. Together with Bud Holloway and Carter Sawchuk, they appear to an unstoppable offensive machine. Having Trotter and Bud killing penalties is a nightmare for the power play unit and teams should strive to play them 5 on 5 as much as possible. With five minutes left in the third, shots on goal were a whopping 50 each. Holloway had 3 goals and an assist and Sawchuk 3 goals and 2 assists. Gabrielle (2 and 1) and Morriseau (2 and 1) were Carlyle's best. Both these teams have more offensive firepower than Redvers but the Rockets are stronger defensively. It must be noted that Moosomin was missing offensive winger Devin McGoningal and top 4 defenseman Jevon Schwann from their lineup. The Cougars were missing Dakota Rose and Nikita Kovalenko. Import newcomer Tanner Froese did not dress for Carlyle. Moosomin appears to be a lock for first place and there is a good potential matchup of Redvers/Carlyle in the semis which will be a dandy. My estimate of the crowd was 400/450. Pot of gold $920.00. FYI, Moosomin charged $10.00 at the gate and 2 bucks for a program.
