Okay peoples. The ultimate debate. What is the proper way to run a guaranteed 50/50? Let’s say it’s a $500 guaranteed.
Total pot(game sales only) stays under $1000 then winner gets $500 so you only charge the donator what the winner was shorted from actual game sales? OR you put the donators $1000 in the total pot at the start of the game?
Total pot sales(without donation) goes over $1000 and donator gets a freebie? OR you put the donators $1000 in the total pot at the start of the game and the 50/50 winner gets half the total pot(game sales plus $1000 donation)?

How I would do it, if a business guaranteed the 50/50 at $500. If the total pot only reached $940. I would pay out the $500 to the winner and the business would be on the hook for $30 to the club. If the sponsor is willing to give you $500, I would just start the pot at $500 and split the total 50-50

I've always thought there were there to guarantee a minimum payout... if the actual ticket sales go over then the business gets a freebie. otherwise wouldn't you say the pot starts at $$$ and go from there?

Some people don’t like giving the business free advertising if game sales put the winnings above the guarantee. You could definitely word it as “Pot starts at $$$” but this still guarantees a certain winnings.

If a business is putting in an set amount than they put up that amount. If the pot is 1000 than 500 to winner and 500 to club

A lot of this debate comes down to who is supposed to benefit from the donation. The club or the 50/50 winner. You put the $1000 donation in to “start” the pot and essentially guarantee $500 right away. In the end of that scenario $500 goes to the winner and $500 to the club from the donation(plus the increased sales due to the higher pot starting point). If you have the donator just needing to “top up” the winner on a short, the only benefit to the club was increased sales due to the guarantee.
Allowing the “top up” option however gives the opportunity to offer a higher guarantee due to less risk for the donator of owing a large amount if the pot is short.

If it’s a $500 guaranteed take home 50/50 sponsored by “X business”. And the pot only reaches $800. It’s split $400 to the winner plus $100 top up from the guarantor. And $400 to the hockey club.
It costs the guarantor business $100 for that scenario. If the total pot reaches $1000 or over, the guarantor is granted a freebie

there is a difference between a guarantee and a "pot starts"at, the latter being the more lucrative of the two.
"pot starts at"= club and winner are both guaranteed $250 plus all the sales over and above
"guarantee" = sponsoring business could get a freebie
