So doing that Christmas wish list post got me thinking about the longevity of the league in general.
1. first off the money getting spent is getting out of hand! all these teams are going to be fundraising non-stop all year round just to pay their imports. payrolls well over 2K a game, your looking at 40-50K just to pay imports, then providing vehicles to shuttle guys around, fuel, sticks i mean when does it stop. IF you go deep will obviously help, but for provincials adding guys means more $$$ just to chase a prov title. And it's obvious that all these guys that played Junior A and higher are all talking to each other, and sharing what their getting paid. honestly how is this sustainable? there will be a point that executives and the folks that volunteer their time say enough... then what happens? team folds? leaves for a league like the wheatland where your not allowed to pay imports? or twin river where your only allowed a few? many towns couldn't put a team on the ice without all the imports they are bringing in..
2. young locals, this isn't 1990 anymore and you can see the mentality of these young kids is different. if your going to get 4th line minutes your first few years lots are saying it, id rather play adult safe and get to play. And you have teams like Drake and Leroy with little to zero minor hockey to feed the pipeline then there is no future.
Just makes me think that things have to change or its not going to be good.

Money has taken over, even local players are looking for money to continue playing. When you see teams like Leroy paying average to below average Jr B guys per game, how are other teams even supposed to compete.
The days of having a solid local stud like Allan Blair or Lamont are over.
Hopefully we can see the league take a step back and come down to earth so that we don’t lose a good thing, we have the power league in the province. Let’s not let that fade away.
Zamboni Driver you have some great points.

Provincial titles over the last 10 years: SV: 11 LL: 10 Or more recently, provincial wins over the last 5 years: SV: 7 LL: 3 3 of them coming last season, and Davidson wins if there started doesn’t get hurt and you can say shoulda woulda coulda all u want but it’s the truth. The llhl is the super league for a reason. Most llhl teams enter A how many svhl teams do?

Zamboni Driver you have some great points. You guys remember the fort carlton league? import rules got looser and looser, budgets went higher, less locals were willing to play / could play that calibre of hockey. Its no different then is happening here. A few rules get tweaked to help smaller centers have teams, and it opens the flood gates for the rest of the league. Its not sustainable, and i wouldnt blame anyones management for not wanting to keep up to the ridiculous prices that some of these players think they should get. Then you get paint huffers like cheeseburger on here telling every local/import/coach that they should quit hockey, and a guy starts to wonder what the point of putting in the massive amount of effort it takes to just keep a senior team alive let alone competitive.

Or more recently, provincial wins over the last 5 years: SV: 7 LL: 3 3 of them coming last season, and Davidson wins if there started doesn’t get hurt and you can say shoulda woulda coulda all u want but it’s the truth. The llhl is the super league for a reason. Most llhl teams enter A how many svhl teams do? How about this...both SVHL and LLHL are among the premier leagues in the province. It can be argued they are the top 2 year after year in my experiences given the quality of hockey, number of ex-pro/USports/NCAA/WHL/SJHL players that have played and/or are currently playing plus the strong local group of players teams have been able to build around. I'm sure the HHL, SWHL, FCHL, QVHL at times would be able to make a very good case to be considered among the top 2 in the last 10 years. Ridiculous take re: downplaying SVHL teams not entering A, the SVHL has always considered themselves a B league given the varying sizes of towns and have predominately entered B/C/D as a result based on SHA population + import rules. Likely reason teams such as Drake, Watrous and Lanigan had to enter A was out of necessity given their roster make up, not because of choice. Davidson is the anomaly as they've traditionally entered C or D and haven't had to enter A to my knowledge. I have to admit hearing local players being paid to play on the hometown team is a new phenomenon to me, this certainly cannot be sustained long term. Never had an issue with imports being paid but a hometown guy doesn't sit so well with me!

Crazy to hear locals or jr B players getting paid. Which teams have the highest payroll per game?

When young new players are being paid I think it’s a piss off, I totally understand if you’re say a guy who has 16-18 years experience and make your team better every night, that is a bit different. But these new young players and JR B guys don’t deserve gas money or sticks. Just play for the love of the game.

IF your a local and asking for money from your home team, your trash... plain and simple.

Losing sr hockey isn’t a llhl thing it’s a sask thing. Look at others leagues, Highway, fort Carlton etc have had to merge, wheatland is on its last legs. When there is no minor hockey to feed the sr system, the teams fold. Look within the league. Most of the best local players on every team are older than 30 when many players decided to move on from hockey. In some cases like Wynyard, Wadena and Davidson, their locals are closer to 40. Drake is on its last legs with the lack of young locals, Watrous, lanigan, Leroy are all out of locals that can play. It’s nobody’s fault, just a fact.

Yes however there is some good minor hockey in Muenster, Humboldt, Lanigan and watrous typically. Combined with the guys who played AA or AAA, always a few guys who are moving home after the dream dies or college ends. For the longest time Muenster had good minor hockey but then by the time it was SR they got divided up to Lanigan, leroy, Drake, or lake Lenore. We see that with Bruno this year. A lot of Bruno is ex Humboldt A or AA players.

Additionally look at highschool populations now vs the old days. The old days we had 30+ in a highschool grad class now most of the towns in under 15/20 (minus Wynyard, Wadena, Foamlake, and maybe watrous). We may be over saturated for the amount of young guys out there if you live near Lanigan within 30 minutes of you you can play for Drake, Leroy, Watrous, Lanigan, and Bruno us just outside that radius. The money isn’t killing the league the death of small towns are. Leroy and Drake are to of the smallest towns with big payrolls because they have the support of the older generation and community. If we want to address the issue of dying SR in LLHL we need to do a better job of getting young guys home and on the ice. 2 shifts a period isn’t enough- they need some ice time and help to drive from Saskatoon or Regina if they are in college to play. With gas prices and vehicles now we need to ensure equity amoung the young guys. Pay the old guys and imports but if we do not welcome and integrate the young bucks we are in trouble 10 years from now.
