I would be more curious to know how many senior teams would fold in the province if they didn't pay? just look at rosters and how many people are not local on certain teams... guaranteed there are teams like that for sure. that being said when its the same 6-7 people doing all the fundraising all the time it gets old fast, and the desire to keep it going goes away.

I would be more curious to know how many senior teams would fold in the province if they didn't pay? A lot would. But maybe we’d be surprised just how much the good hockey players still just want to play hockey. It would revert back to what town has funnest group of locals to play with, or perhaps the teams with shortest travel, or the rink with the best cheeseburgers or even the prettiest woman. Who knows but I think I might like that way better. Sure the quality drops for most teams, but it’s all relevant. At least the locals who pay the way would know who most the players were again.Doesn’t matter cause It’s never going to happen . Pandora’s box is wide open

Our home team took a year off this year due to lack of money to bring in the players. Everyone the board asked wanted money to come and as Zambonidrivere mentioned the 5~6 board members who do all the fundraising with help from spouses etc. just got tired of doing it for ppl who have no loyalty to the community and players who will not help do any of the fundraising to support the team. They are pro's so they have the attitude that they are just there to play and get a paycheck. You pay these players and next year someone else offers them more money and they just go to the highest bidder
It is also tougher in smaller communities to keep going back to the same 10 local businesses looking for money when you already ask them to buy advertising, guarantee 50/50's, and provide prizes or donations to support any sort of other fundraising activity...i.e. lady's night out, steak night etc.

I'd say your comment about the players coming in for the most part are bang on... there are some guys who are different for sure, and also guys that start coming out for big coin but take less as time goes on as they get to know the team and community. as much as i hate the amount these guys get i don't blame them... if you can make 5-10K a winter playing hockey for fun, it's pretty hard to turn down, that's a couple nice vacations for you and the missus or christ that's your vehicle payment for the year to... If your lucky enough to have a hometown guy that played some WHL, CIS or semi pro, you likely can save a little money as some of their friends might come for less than what's out there but your still paying them for sure.

Speclation yes, but lets not forget that all the import players know each other, and are good friends, the speculation isn't that blurred. Kindo, Leroy, Wynyard, Kennaston, Langenburg are my top five $$ spenders this year. Oddly enough only 2/5 remain in provincials.... Balcarres is up their too for highest payroll How do you figure? Lumsden doesn’t pay as high but pays more players on the roster. Grenfell, Southey, O/V would all be at par if not more. Especially Grenfell when healthy.

I think your story is the same one played in a lot of communities. When you’re a team that tries not to get caught up in the spending but your constantly outmanned because of money, it gets old pretty fast. Get busy living or get busy dying I suppose. Over the years I’ve watched a lot of towns go from just missing out then start buying, then get fairly dominant for a while . But most of them eventually burn out and crash real hard. And once a team folds, hockey rarely comes back. Especially now with the ever shrinking amount of young local players coming up the pipe. Keeping a senior team period, is not easy.

Hockey is dying in general in Canada. Kids these days want to play online games and get big on that.

Hockey is dying in general in Canada. Kids these days want to play online games and get big on that. That might be part of the reason, but I think there’s a lot of factors that contribute to participation rates declining. The cost of playing minor hockey is pretty high, and is just not affordable for a lot of families. Especially right now with inflation. Putting money back into minor sports in communities to help cut costs would be beneficial to all age groups in my opinion. Not sure whether that would be from grants, fundraisers, 50/50, etc. but it’s most likely feasible in some way.

I agree but there are ways to mitigate costs for equipment. You do not need to have the best skates or stick to be a good hockey player. Used stuff works just as good...

Add $2000 or more for tournaments, hotels and the wife’s booze. But I think it’s money well spent. Way better than having a kid grow up without any social skills, discipline, physical activity and team player skills not to mention some fun a lifetime of memories.
